A survey by Braintrust, a worker-owned talent platform that uses blockchain technology, found that 85% of knowledge workers are open to becoming freelancers. The reasons include working from anywhere, being their own boss and working on jobs of interest.
Braintrust defines knowledge worker as a role that does not include shift or seasonal work, does not involve driving and does not take place in a location other than an office or home.
Among knowledge workers who are not freelancers, 73% reported financial stability is the reason they continue with traditional employment. Other obstacles in the way of making the switch to freelancing include concerns over finding quality, consistent work; managing administrative duties such as taxes; and getting started.
However, only 4% of knowledge workers cited traditional benefits such as health insurance and 401(k) programs as reasons to prefer full-time employment.
Braintrust’s survey, which comprised responses from 808 knowledge workers, included 675 workers in the US, of whom 85% are employed and 15% are freelancers. The survey also included talent from around the globe of which 22% are employed and 78% are freelancers.
