Looking at all nonfarm jobs, the US added 943,000 in July for total employment of more than 146.8 million; however, the number is still 3.7% less than the pre-pandemic level set in February 2020 of 152.5 million jobs.

“With solid employment gains, increasing labor-force participation and upward revision to prior months’ numbers, the July report is a strong sign for the US workforce,” said Barry Asin, president of Staffing Industry Analysts. “Going forward, we are optimistic about the prospects for continued employment growth despite ongoing reminders that we are not fully done with the pandemic.”

The change in total nonfarm payroll employment for May was revised up by 31,000, from an increase of 583,000 to an increase of 614,000, and the change for June was revised up by 88,000, from an increase of 850,000 to an increase of 938,000. With these revisions, employment in May and June combined is 119,000 higher than previously reported.

Notable job gains in July occurred in leisure and hospitality, local government education, and professional and business services. Leisure and hospitality jobs rose by 380,000 in July though employment in the sector is still down 10.3% from its February 2020 level.

Also in July, the average hourly earnings for all industries rose by 11 cents to $30.54.
