The average weekly number of temporary and contract workers employed by US staffing firms rose 15.2% year over year in the third quarter to 2.7 million, the American Staffing Association announced today. And staffing firms are optimistic about the present quarter.

“The staffing industry is playing an increasingly important role in today’s labor market by providing talent sourcing expertise and workforce flexibility to employers in need of workers, and helping candidates find roles that are the right fit,” ASA President and CEO Richard Wahlquist said.

Data comes from the quarterly “ASA Staffing Employment and Sales Survey.”

Comparing the third quarter with the second, the average weekly number of workers was up 3.5%. Staffing industry employment has historically seen quarter-over-quarter gains following first-quarter declines, according to the ASA. The second quarter of this year diverged from that trend, but the third quarter data showed a return to growth.
