Nearly Half of Temp Workers Worked a Second Job While on Temp Assignment in 2021:SIA

Forty-six percent of temporary workers reported that while on a temp assignment in 2021, they were working on a second job at least once, according to findings from Staffing Industry Analysts’ 2022 North America Temporary Worker Survey.

Findings reveal that while on a temp assignment, 16% of workers were also employed on a permanent, full-time basis, 9% were simultaneously working on a permanent part-time basis, 16% were also working on a second temporary assignment and 4% were working on an online work services platform.

“It should be noted that although 46% of temporary workers said they concurrently worked a second job in at least one temp assignment last year, that doesn’t necessarily mean that at any given moment 46% of temps are moonlighting,” said Jon Osborne, VP strategic research at SIA, and the author of the report. “It may be that concurrent work occurred only during some assignments or during only part of an assignment, so at any given moment the proportion working concurrently may be a little lower. Nonetheless, the vast majority of temporary workers do want full-time hours or more, so it may be that in many cases it’s necessary to string together more than one job to achieve that.”

The 2022 Temporary Worker Survey includes responses from 5,607 North American temporary workers and was conducted in late 2021.

The survey findings also indicate that second jobs are more common among lower-paid, younger workers. Temporary workers 45 and younger, those earning $16 per hour or less and those in healthcare support and production occupations are most likely to work a second job.

Those 56 and older, earning $46 per hour or more working in computer/mathematical, office/administrative and business/financial were least likely to work on a second job.
