A global increase in salaries in nearly all tech roles is driven primarily by the growth in salaries of professionals with more than three years of experience, according to a survey by Hired.
The report also found that though the number of companies seeking to hire remote junior-level talent has increased, local salaries for junior-level candidates have failed to increase as quickly as salaries for experienced professionals.
Looking at different areas, candidates in the San Francisco Bay Area reported the highest salary offers, with an average local salary of $174,063. It was followed by Seattle, $168,069; New York, $161,128; Boston, $158,548; and Austin, Texas, $157,612.
Average local salaries for candidates in Boston, Los Angeles and Seattle are now on a par with tech hubs such as New York and San Francisco.
As the preference for remote working continues, remote salaries have outpaced local salaries; 15 out of 17 markets had higher remote salaries, up from 13 markets in 2021, with remote roles paying $3,000 more on average globally. Overall, the average remote salaries rose $162,950 this year, ranking third highest in the report after San Francisco Bay Area and New York average local salaries.
The top three highest paying markets in the US for remote salaries in 2022 were San Francisco Bay Area at $175,909; Seattle at $171,432; and New York at $162,261
The hiring climate this year has been full of contradictions and challenges, according to Hired CEO Josh Brenner.
“We’ve seen climbing salaries, aggressive hiring and layoffs — all at once,” Brenner said. “However, the hiring landscape remains competitive as companies innovate and diversify their teams through remote work. We’re seeing salaries rise globally as employers expand their talent pools and candidates find more opportunities outside their backyards.”
The 2022 State of Tech Salaries: Navigating an Uncertain Hiring Market is based on the analysis of more than 907,000 interview requests over 47,000 active positions, facilitated through Hired’s marketplace from January 2019 to June 2022. Hired also surveyed over 2,000 tech professionals on their salary, benefits, and flexible work preferences.
