Employment in Canada rose by 104,000 in December, Statistics Canada reported today. Total employment was 19.8 million.

Full-time work accounted for the lion’s share of jobs; Canada added 85,000 full-time jobs in December from November. Part-time employment rose by 19,500.

The number of employees in the private sector rose by 0.9%, or 112,000, in December, the largest increase since February 2022. In contrast, in December, the number of employees in the public sector and the number of self-employed workers were little changed on a monthly and year-over-year basis.

Canada’s unemployment rate declined in December to 5.0%, from 5.1% in November. The rates are just above Canada’s record-low unemployment rate of 4.9% in June and July.

Ontario led employment growth in the provinces by adding 42,100 jobs, followed by Alberta, which added 24,500 jobs.
