The Canadian Staffing Index released by the Association of Canadian Search, Employment and Staffing Services rose 6.5% year over year to a reading of 98 in May. The index — which reflects the volume of labor supplied by temporary staffing agencies in Canada — rose the same 6.5% sequentially from the April index value of 95.
“The index was 98 in May, up 6.5% versus a year ago and aided by having one additional working day in the month this year,” says Timothy Landhuis, VP of research at Staffing Industry Analysts. “Adjusting for working days, the May reading suggests modest year-over-year growth in the volume of hours.”
Each month’s index is based upon the number of billed hours reported by a monthly panel of staffing firms. The index value of 100 corresponds to the size of the industry in July 2008, when the index began; the index is not adjusted for seasonal factors.
