The fastest-growing freelance skills in the fourth quarter, as measured by data from staffing platform Freelancer.com, are “report writing” and “Matlab and Mathematica.” The latter are separate programming languages used by engineers and scientists to analyze data. However, on the other hand, interest in some skills such as CSS3 and those related to NFTs have fallen.
Freelancer.com’s data for its “Fast 50 Index” comes from 372,000 workers on its platform.
The company noted several of the five fastest-growing skills involved research and writing. Freelancer.com reported firms often hire freelancers to assist with tasks at the end of the year such as compiling retrospective reports, creating strategic plans for the upcoming year and writing business reports.
Overall, the five fastest-growing freelancer skills on the platform in the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter were:
- Report writing, up 59.6% to 5,384 jobs
- Matlab and Mathematica, up 56.4% to 1,955 jobs
- Research, up 36.4% to 5,325 jobs
- Web scraping, up 32.7% to 5,162 jobs
- Research writing, up 32.1% to 9,944 jobs
Freelancer.com also reported on the jobs that saw demand falling at the fastest rate. The top five freelancer skills with falling demand in the fourth quarter compared to the third were:
- CSS3, down 67.8% to 395
- Angular, down 58.3% to 608
- API integration, down 55.4% to 472
- Data extraction, down 53.3% to 504
- Blog writing, down 53.0% to 771
Looking at tasks from a year-over-year basis, those involving nonfungible tokens and Bitcoin led the pack. NFT-related jobs shifted from the fastest growing to the fastest falling:
- Nonfungible tokens tasks, down 75.4% to 503
- Bitcoin tasks, down 74.9% to 381
- Ethereum tasks, down 73.8% to 613
- Solidity tasks, down 69.1% to 614
- Odd jobs tasks, down 65.0%
