US initial claims for jobless benefits rose by 7,000 last week to a total of 251,000, the US Department of Labor reported today. This is the third consecutive week that claims have risen; they are now at their highest level since November 2021.
CNBC reported that Dow Jones had estimated 240,000 applications for the latest week.
Meanwhile, the four-week moving average of initial jobless claims rose by 4,500 in the week ended July 16 to a total of 240,500.
While reaching their highest level since November, claims remain below the level most economists see as presenting a threatening signal for the job market and economy, Reuters reported.
